Internal Protectors and External Protectors in IFS

Expanding on an email from Jay Earley, IFS trainer. In support of Internal Family Systems (IFS).

In 2020 Jay sent his list an email promoting a training with about 20 words on two kinds of protectors going beyond his earlier ideas of two kinds of protectors, Managers and Firefighters. As you explore the positive intent of your internal Protectors, you may discover two categories of threats they intend to protect your Self from.

Both externally and internally focused Protectors protect Exiles. Each group relates differently with the Exiles they protect. Externally focussed Protectors care about the exile and want it protected from harmful abusers.

Internally focused Protectors believe the intense shame and negative feelings of internal Exiles are dangerous. These Protectors developed out of external admonitions and internal desire to avoid being flooded with upwelling feelings.

Externally focussed Protectors ~ Some protectors intend to stop and prevent external harm or abuse from other people.

Externally focussed protectors perceive the exile they protect, as vulnerable and unable to protect itself, from external abusers and external threats.
